Courtesy Announcement:
Annie Virgina, affectionately known as, “Gin”, was born September 11, 1947, in Elbert County, Georgia, to the parentage of the late Bennie and Doris (Fouch) Allen. She was the oldest of her six siblings. She was raised by her guardians, the late Berry and Clouis (Fouch) Burch, alongside her first cousins whom she loved as her very own siblings.
At an early age in life Gin accepted Jesus as her Lord and Savor and joined Maple Spring Baptist Church in Dewy Rose, Georgia. After graduating high school, she felt the need to better her life therefore she left the Nuberg Community and move to Washington, D.C. with her maternal grandparents.
Continuing her Christian growth, she joined the former John S. Thomas Baptist Church in SE Washington, D.C. On January 23, 2011, she joined First Rising Mt. Zion Baptist Church under the pastorate of Rev. Ernest R. Gibson, Sr. She was a member of the Sunday School, and a former member of the Missionary Society Auxiliary, Sisters In Fellowship. Gin was a dedicated and supportive member who loved the Lord. When she was unable to attend service in person, she did not hesitate to join virtually. She read and studied the scriptures every night, making notes in her journals. Her favorite scripture was Psalm 23.
Gin was a 1966 graduate of Hart County Training School. She continued her education by attending the University of the District of Columbia where she received her Associate Degree in Business Administration. Gin retired from the Census Bureau in 2004 after 35+years of government service. After retirement she worked for Prince George’s County Public School System at Magnolia Elementary School for three years as a recess aid. She was a member of the PG Department of Parks & Recreation, Senior Clubs at the Evelyn Cole Senior Activity Center and the Peppermill Community Center. She was also a member of the Senior Club at the PG United Communities Against Poverty (UCAP). As a member of these clubs, she enjoyed hanging out with her “ladies” and participating in the various programs. Gin loved to sew and do crafts. She was excited to show what she had made whether it was a Redskin apron and kitchen potholders or a painting or flower arrangement. Gin loved family, especially spending quality time with her only son, grandchildren and great grands.
Gin loved butterflies. Every room in her home was adorned with pictures of them. She felt that their profound life cycle symbolized transformation, rebirth and renewal. Their vibrant wings were an encouragement to hold fast to her faith, trusting in God’s will for her life. Fulfilling her need for companionship, Gin met and married the love of her life; of 48 years, Peter Henderson, Jr. Together they raised her two children, Reginald and Pamela Allen. Although her earthly body is no longer with us, we can find comfort in knowing without a doubt she is living in the loving arms of our Lord and Savior. She is now reunited with her parents, her husband, Peter Henderson, her daughter, Pamela Allen, siblings, Bennie Frank Allen, Jr., Ernest Lee Allen, Sylvia Allen Jones, Annie Lois Dozier, Robert “Ken” Burch, Tommie Burch, and Jimmie Burch.
Gin leaves a loving legacy in the hearts of her family and friends. Her memory is lovingly treasured by her devoted son, Reginald “Reggie” Allen. She is also remembered by her sisters, Dorothy Gaines of Hartwell, Georgia, and Barbara (Paul) Van Hagen of Whitsett, North Carolina, and her brother, Calvin Allen of Hartwell, Georgia. In addition, her family circle includes sisters Jeannette Epps, Sherdene Huff, Betty Hunt, and Yvonne Craft, and brothers Albert (Julia) Burch, Aurthamis (Frances) Burch, and Marvin (Deborah) Burch. She is survived by three grandsons: Travis Holmes, Lawnelle Rogers, and Lawtez Rogers, along with five cherished great-grandchildren. Many others shared a special bond with Gin, including her dear friend Dorothy Cook as well as “her girl” Vickie, whom she relied on for company and assistance when needed. Her legacy of love and faith continues in the lives of her extended family, friends, and all who were touched by her kindness and generous spirit.
