Mrs. Bessie Mae McCord Wilson, age 77 of Elberton, Georgia entered her eternal rest on Sunday, September 10, 2023.
Bessie Mae McCord-Wilson was born on April 15, 1946, to the late Floyd Welcome McCord Sr. and the late Suzie Tom (Leverette) McCord in Lincoln County, GA. Bessie was one of 8 children. On Sunday morning September 10, 2023, God, in his infinite wisdom and design, thought it was necessary to call forth one of His blessed children into His place of eternal compensation for work well done. Bessie’s life, in the earth realm was one that God was truly proud of because it embodied the essence of God.
She joined the Maple Spring Baptist Church at an early age where she served on many auxiliaries such as AWANA, Sunday School Teacher, Mission Ministry and President of the Pastor’s Support Ministry; until her health began to fail, she was an active member of Maple Spring Choir. She loved her church family, especially her Pastor and First Lady. She served faithfully until her health began to fail and the Lord called her home to rest.
She attended Hart and Elbert County schools and was a graduate of Blackwell Memorial High School Class of 1964. She was a great caregiver of many for many years, and she loved each family as though they were her family.
She enjoyed spending time with her family and especially being a devoted auntie and greatauntie. She loved to sing. She would travel all over the east coast and sing with her late husband Howard Wilson Sr. and the Gospel Commander, later on with The Gospel Spiritualettes (AKA The Georgia Girls) of Elberton GA and lastly with The Gospelettes of Elberton, GA. Her baritone/tenor voice could always be heard as she would adlib in any song and really pull the group to sing at their best. She was an active member and officer of The Vacation Savings Club.
Bessie loved baseball and no matter who she was talking too when those Atlanta Braves were playing you had to be quiet. She LOVED her Atlanta Braves.
Bessie was preceded in death by her parents, Floyd Welcome McCord Sr. and Sue Tom (Leverette) McCord; four brothers, Robert Lee McCord, Thomas McCord Sr. Floyd (FW) McCord Jr., Eugen T McCord; three sisters Lizzie Mae McCord, Joetta McCord-Brawner and Ella Kate McCord-Smith and her husband, Howard Wilson Sr.
