Dereka Shanta Thornton

Dereka Shanta Thornton has left us too soon, but God knows best. She was born on May 9, 1984, to Regina Grier and the late Freddie Edwards in Elberton, GA; her mother later moved to Athens, GA and she attended school in Madison County.

Heaven has a new Angel, and she gained her wings on May 1, 2025. She is reunited with her grandmother Louise Thornton whom she loved and missed dearly and all her other relatives and friends. She was a loving daughter, mother, grandmother, niece, cousin and friend. She had a sweet gentle spirit and everyone loved her. She loved being with her family and friends and having fun. Her compassion was styling hair, and her favorite color was light purple.

She is preceded in death by her father Freddie Edwards and her grandparents Thomas and Louise Thornton.

She leaves to cherish her beautiful memories her loving mother Regina Grier; one daughter Tayinac Callaway; two sons Antron Thornton and Antoinio Thornton; two grandchildren; one sister Akayla (Duke) Rakestraw; one niece Yasmine Dixon; two nephews Jaylen Rakestraw and Jamir Rakestraw all of Athens, GA; a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Public viewing will be held on Monday, May 5, 2025, from 1:00 - 5:00pm, located at Mack's Funeral Home - Elberton Chapel. 

Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, May 6, 2025, at 12:00pm, located at Mack's Funeral Home - Elberton Chapel. 

Interment service will immediately follow the funeral service located at Antioch Missionary Baptist Church - Elberton, GA.
