Obituary for Diane Thornton
Beloved Oldest Sister, Cherished Friend, and Guiding Light
Diane Thornton, the oldest sister in her family and a treasured presence in the lives of all who knew her, passed away peacefully, November 29, 2025, at Prisma of Greenville Memorial Hospital, leaving behind a legacy of love, strength, and kindness. Diane’s unwavering support, wisdom, and gentle spirit shaped her family and community in countless ways. Diane loved our Heavenly Father and joined Oak Grove Baptist Church at an early age. (Her favorite saying was, ask God, He will show you.)
Diane was born in Dewy Rose, GA, to the late Love Joy and Mozelle Allen Thornton. Born to a loving family, Diane grew up as the eldest daughter naturally assuming the role of caregiver and mentor to her brothers and sisters. Diane’s dedication to her family was a constant source of comfort and inspiration.
Diane was known for her kind heart and steadfast resilience. She faced adversity with grace, always offering a helping hand or a listening ear. As the oldest sister, Diane set an example of integrity and generosity, nurturing family bonds that remain strong and enduring.
Beyond her family, Diane (or Ann as she was called by her family,) was a cherished friend to many. Her warmth and empathy drew people to her, and she was always ready to celebrate a friend’s success or lend support in times of need. Her involvement in her community reflected her belief in the power of kindness and connection.
Diane Thornton’s legacy lives in the hearts of her loved ones. Her wisdom, laughter, and love for life will be remembered by all who had the privilege to know her. As the oldest sister, she leaves behind a family strengthened by her example and a circle of friends enriched by her presence. Diane attended Bowman Elementary School and graduated from Blackwell Memorial High School. After high school she moved to Conyers, GA, where she lived until the death of her father in 1973. She then moved to Elberton to help her mother. Diane worked several jobs before she gained employment with Prestolite in Elberton, GA, where she worked until she retired. She was a member of The Sweet City Choir and later became an honorary member of The Family Connection Choir at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, until she became ill. She moved to Stonecrest, GA, and then to South Carolina.
Diane loved to cook for others. And lottery, spades and bingo were her favorite games to play. She liked to watch game shows and would never miss a wrestling match.
Diane was preceded in death by her father Love Joy Thornton; her mother Mozelle Allen Thornton; three brothers Kenneth Thornton, Vernon Thornton, and Zeva D. Allen; three sisters-in-law Elaine Davenport Allen, Mary J. Allen, and Lois R. Glaze Thornton; longtime companion Edward Turman, Sr.
She leaves to cherish her memories Kelsey N. Thornton (her niece who she loved and raised in home as her daughter); three brothers George Lee Thornton (Shirley A.) Elberton, GA, Larry D. Thornton Hinesville, GA, and Kennard Thornton Elberton, GA; four sisters Juanita Hunt (Jimmy Lee) Hartwell, GA, Carenthia Thornton Elberton, GA, Gwyneth T. Rowe (Raymond) Stonecrest, GA and Maxine Thornton South Carolina; one granddaughter Genesis J. Thornton Hartwell, GA; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Diane Thornton will be deeply missed, but her spirit will remain a guiding light for all who loved her.
