Douglas Jones Obituary

Mr. Douglas Wilbur Jones., a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin and friend, embarked to his new address on March 16, 2026. As the angels beckoned him to his eternal home, he gained his wings and ascended from his residence in Hartwell, Georgia, to his heavenly home.

Douglas Jones, 77, of Hartwell, Georgia, passed away peacefully on March 16, 2026. A native of Hartwell, Douglas lived a life marked by service, innovation, and unwavering dedication to his family and community.

Born on January 18, 1949, Douglas was the eldest child of the late Eddie Lee Jones and Elma Lee Jones. From an early age, he displayed a remarkable curiosity and talent for understanding how things worked. He was known for taking things apart and rebuilding them back together - especially electronics. He attended Hart County Training School, where his passion for fixing and building first began to take shape.

Douglas graduated from high school at the age of 16, an early sign of his determination and intellect. He went on to attend Savannah State University, earning a degree in electrical engineering. Following his academic achievements, he proudly served his country in the United States Army, rising to the rank of Sergeant. During his military service, he was stationed in various locations, including Alaska, where he continued to develop his engineering expertise.

After completing his service, Douglas began his professional career as an engineer at Y12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, where he produced products for NASA. Though he achieved great success in his field, his love for his hometown led him back to Hartwell, where he continued to make history as the city's first Black mailman through his work at the Hart County Post Office. His dedication, reliability, and warm spirit made him a beloved figure throughout the community.

Douglas was also known for his exceptional gardening skills. His garden was a source of nourishment not only for his family but for his community. He generously shared his harvest with anyone who needed it, reflecting his kind and giving nature. A faithful member of Flat Rock C.M.E. Church, Douglas lived his life grounded in faith, humility, and service to others. He also loved going to bible study every week with his wife at St. Luke C.M.E. Church.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 50 years, Cathy Durrett Jones; one son, Baron Leon Jones of Athens, Georgia; two daughters, Almesha Leigh Jones of the home and Dr. Dianesia Lashea Jones-Seeger (Winfried) of Germany; one grandson, Ronald Seeger of Germany; two sisters, Brenda J. Rouse of Hartwell and Darlene (Jimmy) Pugh of Hephzibah, Georgia. He is also survived by special in-laws: Clara Yahn, Reginald (Terri) Durrett, Barbara (Angelo) Harper, Samantha (Kenneth) Lewis, Gwen Durrett, and Betty Jo Durrett. He also leaves behind special nieces Porsha (Damein) Hughes, Candice Setchel, and Jamie (Kevin) Armstrong. He was lovingly referred to as Daddy Doug by his great-nieces and great-nephews: Asja Henderson, Damein Hughes Jr. (DJ), Breanna Hughes, Elijah Hughes, Amelia Armstrong, Aubrey Armstrong, and Aiden Armstrong; four good friends: Bennie Harper, Jim Tom Curry, Jesse Barnes and Woodrow Harper, Jr.

In addition to his parents, Douglas was preceded in death by his brothers Donnie Jones and Eugene Brown, and niece Revonda Donnette Jones.

Douglas Jones will be remembered for his kind spirit, his generous heart, and his enduring commitment to uplifting those around him. His legacy will continue to inspire all who knew and loved him.
