Mr. Dwight Rolland Baker, age 72 of Colbert, Georgia entered his eternal rest on Friday, August 25, 2023.
Mr. Dwight Rolland Baker, a native of Montgomery County, Georgia was born on February 27, 1951, to the parentage of Beatrice Kitchen Baker and Henry Baker, Jr. who preceded him in death on June 19, 2015, and February 12, 2023. Dwight departed this life on August 25, 2023.
Dwight joined the Mt. Moriah Baptist Church McGregor, Ga at an early age and was an active member until he left to attend college. He graduated from Montgomery County High School where he was active in the band and was senior class president. After high school he attended Savannah State College and received his B.S. degree in Biology. While attending Savannah State College, he was active in the Men’s Choir and also chosen to attend the summer medical programs at the Medical College of Georgia. After graduating from college in August of 1973, he married his college sweetheart, Mae Etta Cason Baker of Eastman, GA. To this union, his daughter Katherine Baker was born. They later moved to Athens Georgia where he was one of the first African Americans in his position with the United States Department of Agriculture. On February 25, 1983, his first wife, Mae Etta Cason Baker, died after nearly 10 years of marriage. While working with the USDA, Dwight received many accolades and honors before retiring from this job and later set up his lawn care service and worked with the Clark County Corrections. Dwight was a hard worker, loved life and enjoyed being with his family and others.
Dwight was later united in Holy Matrimony to Cassandra Hughes Baker and to this union was born a son, Benjamin K. Baker. He also is the father of a son, Dwight Antonio Baker.
Dwight was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, his first wife, his sister, Mary Robinson, and 2 of his fur babies, Arthur and Jack.
He leaves to cherish his memories, his wife of nearly 40 years, Cassandra D. Hughes Baker; three children: Dwight Antonio Baker of Tempe, Arizona; Katherine (Shane) Rucker of Jefferson, GA and Benjamin K. Baker of Marietta, GA; three grandchildren whom he adored, Devante, Abasha and Olivia.
He is also survived by three sisters, Rosetta Summersett ( Rev. Roy) of Reidsville, GA; Elmira Andrews of Ailey, GA, and Cena R. Baker of Dublin, GA ; Four brothers: Henry L. (Joy) Baker of Ailey, Robert (Leila) Baker, Rev. Samuel (Yvette) Baker and Alvin (Jacqueline) Baker of Ailey; one Aunt- Ruby Brown of Vidalia, GA; daughter-in-law, Yanci Mannery Baker and his fur babies, Jack, Jake, Sampson and George; a special friend, Ms. Glenda Moore and a host other relatives, friends and loved ones who will miss him dearly.
Visitation will be held on Friday, September 8, 2023, from 11:00am until 6:00pm, located at New Grove Baptist Church - 1228 Moores Grove Rd. Winterville, GA 30683.
