Mr. George W. Jones, age 75 of Elberton, Georgia entered his eternal rest Saturday, March 11, 2023.
Mr. George Washington Jones, also known as Joe Louis or Jones and Buke as his wife affectionately called him, was born on May 7, 1947, to Lucy Mae Smith and George W. Jones in Elberton, GA. At an early age, he joined Oak Grove Baptist Church and was a graduate of Blackwell Memorial High School Class of 1964.
George married Nelcenia White, his high school sweetheart, on September 4, 1965. Shortly after taking their vows, George enlisted into the United States Army and was deployed to Vietnam where he served for 3 years. After his overseas tour, he returned to Georgia and continued his military service with the National Guard for 12 years. His first job at home was with Monroe Automotive Manufacturing Plant where he was employed for 20 years. He then transitioned to Keystone Granite Company as a long distance truck driver and transported granite from the Granite Capital of the World all over the country until his retirement. George was a faithful member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) where he served as Treasurer for numerous years. He was an avid reader and watch collector who also enjoyed fishing, watching sports, and using his binoculars.
George was preceded in death by his parents; two (2) brothers: Melvin Jones and Eddie Willis; two (2) sisters: Wanda Moss and Martha Faust; and his fur-baby Coco.
He leaves to cherish his memory and is survived by his daughter Shelma Jones of Elberton, GA; his son Kelvin Jones and daughter-in-love Tonya Montgomery-Jones of McDonough, GA; seven (7) grandchildren; seven (7) siblings: Annie Hunt (Bob) – Dewey Rose, GA; Mashariki Moses – College Park, GA; Elaine Jones –Atlanta, GA; Terry Willis (Becky) – Junction City, KS; Phyllis Maxwell – Stone Mountain, GA; Eyvonne Willis – Cartersville, GA; Tammy Willis – Elberton, GA; a host of nieces, nephews, and special friends; as well as his new fur-baby Snowflake.
Visitation will be held on Friday, March 17, 2023, from 12:00 - 5:00pm, located at Mack's Funeral Home - Elberton Chapel.
Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, March 18, 2023, at 1:00pm, located at Oak Grove Baptist Church.
Interment service will follow the funeral service at Oak Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.
