Lucy Etta Thornton Geter, the daughter of Herschel Thornton, Sr. and Colonia Sims Thornton was born August 29, 1930.
Lucy received her education at Elbert County Colored High School. Lucy accepted Christ at New Era Baptist Church at an early age and was a faithful member.
Lucy was united in Holy Matrimony to Melvin Geter, Sr. in 1945; there were three sons born Melvin (Barbara) Geter, Athens, GA, Mack (Alesia) Geter, Elberton, GA and Nelson (Pamela) Geter, Marietta, GA.
Lucy was preceded in death by her beloved “Junior” as he was affectionately known, and by her six brothers Marcellus, Willie, Herschel, Jake, James and Carnell Thornton; her four sister Maxine Thornton Webb, Jewell Thornton Freeman, Nelcenia Thornton Tharps, and Janie Thornton Noble.
Lucy was a staple in the Westside Community. She fed the community and showed love to everyone that she was in contact with. Lucy was a member of the Westside Community Aide Club, and Westside Neighborhood Watch.
Lucy also leaves behind ten grandchildren, and a host of great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and a loving and longtime caregiver Mary Bowman.
Lucy had a deeply impactful life, both within her family and in the Westside Community. She was a loving, selfless person who dedicated herself to caring for others, whether through feeding her community, her involvement in local organizations, or simply being a constant source of love and support for her family.
Funeral Service for Mrs. Geter will be held on Saturday, September 6, 2025, at 1:00pm at New Era Baptist Church.
Interment will follow in the family cemetery Greenlawn Cemetery in Elberton, Georgia.
