Mitchell Moses Obituary

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Mr. Mitchell Thomas Moses, who peacefully departed this life on Friday, March 20, 2026, at Grady Hospital located in Atlanta, Georgia.

Born on March 31, 1945, in Bowling Green, Kentucky, to Dolores Catherine Moses and Ossie Alfred Moses, Mitchell Thomas Moses came into the world with a divine purpose: to carry forward the Moses family legacy of service. His life was defined by unwavering faith, enduring love, wisdom, and a deep devotion to family and community. On March 20, 2026, he peacefully answered the call to be with the Lord, leaving a lasting imprint in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing and loving him.

Mitchell’s life was shaped early by his family and their impact that extended far beyond their own household. The Moses family was instrumental in the Bowling Green community, opening their home, known as The Southern Queen, to African American travelers who were not permitted to stay in local hotels and motels. It was a place of refuge, dignity, and hospitality. Many notable figures passed through its doors, including Count Basie, Jesse Owens, and other entertainers, athletes, and civil rights leaders of the time. The Southern Queen is now a historical landmark that continues to serve the community by providing affordable housing, a testament to the family’s legacy of service.

Mitchell’s father was a successful entrepreneur who later became the pastor of State Street Baptist Church, where Mitchell came to know the Lord Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. His mother, along with his grandmother and aunts, instilled in him a deep sense of faith, responsibility, the importance of education, and a calling to serve others. These early influences shaped his lifelong commitment to sharing the love of Jesus Christ and living a life of purpose and service.

Mitchell was a devoted and loving husband to his beloved wife, Lola Ridley Moses, whom he married on August 28, 1971. Their marriage was a beautiful reflection of partnership, faith, friendship, and enduring love. Together, they built a joyful life, rich with traveling, sharing laughter, worshiping side by side, cheering on their favorite teams, and simply delighting in each other’s presence. Their electric bond was not only seen but deeply felt by all who knew them.

Mitchell was a proud and devoted father to his two daughters, Kelli Moses Balloon, affectionately known as “Special K,” and Lyndsay Evans, affectionately known as “Baby Girl.” He was the very definition of a present father: steadfast, encouraging, and full of wisdom. He poured his love into his daughters, guiding them with grace and instilling in them a deep love for the Lord and strong values that would anchor their lives. Mitchell took immense pride not only in the women they became but also in the families they built. He held a special place in his heart for his sons-in-law—Vincent LaRue Balloon and Kevin Evans, whom he loved dearly.

A graduate of Florida A&M University, Mitchell distinguished himself as Basileus of the Upsilon Psi Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated, exemplifying leadership, scholarship, and brotherhood. He carried himself with dignity, excellence, and purpose throughout his life. His professional journey included impactful roles with Boise Cascade, Westinghouse, and Allstate before he courageously stepped into entrepreneurship, founding Corporate Controllers. Through this work, he faithfully supported and uplifted small- and medium-sized businesses, leaving his mark through both his expertise and dedication.

For more than 30 years, Mitchell served faithfully as a trustee at Paseo Baptist Church in Kansas City, Missouri, demonstrating an unwavering commitment to his faith and his church family. His love for the Lord was evident in every aspect of his life, and it served as a guiding light for those around him. He extended that love beyond the church walls through prison ministry and by mentoring teenage boys, pouring into others with compassion, wisdom, and purpose. This spirit of service reflected the strong foundation laid by his family and remained a defining characteristic of his life.

Mitchell was a man who truly never met a stranger. Known for his warmth, wit, and magnetic personality, he had a remarkable ability to make others feel seen, valued, and uplifted. He was fun-loving, brilliant, and full of life, a lover of sports, a devoted fan of jazz music, and an adventurous spirit who embraced life with enthusiasm. His laughter was contagious, his advice was invaluable, and his presence was a gift.

Above all, Mitchell was a family man. In his final months, he and his family were blessed with the priceless gift of time, sharing meals, laughter, stories, and moments of deep connection. Those days were filled with reflection, gratitude, and an even deeper appreciation for the extraordinary man he was. During this time, his family also welcomed a meaningful addition to his circle of care and love. David Wynter, his devoted caregiver, brought him joy, comfort, dignity, and peace. His companionship, kindness, and steady presence were a true blessing to Mitchell and his entire family.

Mitchell’s life was a testament to faith, love, service, and purpose. Though he is no longer physically present, his spirit lives on in the lives he touched, the wisdom he shared, and the love he gave so freely.

Mitchell will be deeply missed, forever cherished, and lovingly remembered. His legacy of love, service, and joy will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Mitchell is survived by his brother, Alfred Freeman Moses (Ada), his honorary brother, James Thomas Green, and his cherished nieces: Alison Michelle Moses, Tippi Hyde (Christopher), Stevie Hyde, Kymberly Stone (Charles), and Blanche Allen. He was preceded in death by his brother, Abraham Hyde (Flora).

“Well-done, my good and faithful servant. Enter into the joy of your Lord.”
