In Loving Memory of
Reverend Florence Gaines Jr.
On September 19, 1928, in the quiet town of Hartwell, Georgia, Florence Gaines Jr. was born to the late Florence Gaines Sr. and Essie Gaines. Raised in a large and loving family, he was one of twelve children and shared his early life with his siblings: Willie, Paul, Johnny, Lloyd Raymond, Ethel Mae, Carlton, Delmos, David, Josie, Harold, and Bobbie Nell—all of whom preceded him in death.
Florence attended Union Baptist High School in Athens, Georgia, where he laid the foundation for a life defined by determination and purpose. After graduation, he moved north in pursuit of greater opportunity, taking on various jobs before answering a higher call to serve his country. He enlisted in the military, where he honorably served for thirty-eight years, demonstrating unwavering commitment and strength.
Following his retirement from military service, Florence’s drive and ambition led him to establish Gaines Trucking Company in Elizabeth, New Jersey. Never one to limit himself, he later followed his creative passion and founded Gaines Photography, where he captured moments and memories that would last a lifetime.
After many years in New Jersey, Florence and his beloved wife, Gladys Gaines, returned to Hartwell, Georgia. It was there that he embraced his spiritual calling. At the age of 69, he enrolled at the Interdenominational Theological Center (ITC) in Atlanta, Georgia, graduating in 1997. He went on to faithfully serve in the CME ministry, becoming a guiding light to many through his preaching, teaching, and steadfast faith.
During his ministry, Reverend Gaines was appointed by the Bishop to serve as pastor of Norman Grove CME Church in Elberton, Georgia. While there, he was entrusted by Bishop Lakey with the vision and leadership of constructing a new Norman Grove CME Church. Upon completion of this project, Reverend Gaines, along with the congregation, friends, and clergy, rejoiced in the accomplishment, made possible through the collective support and dedication of many. Throughout his ministry, he remained steadfast and willing to serve wherever he was called, answering each assignment with humility and devotion.
Reverend Gaines was a lifelong member of Flat Rock CME Church in Hartwell, Georgia, where his faith was nurtured and continually strengthened. He was also an active member of the Hart County NAACP, where he was recognized for his untiring commitment to community service and the betterment of mankind.
Reverend Gaines was a man of deep conviction, whose life was anchored in his love for God, family, and community. His dedication to ministry extended beyond the church walls, as he traveled to Africa and Haiti for missionary work, sharing hope and compassion with people from all walks of life.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Gladys Gaines; his son, Anthony “Tony” Gaines; his parents, Florence Gaines Sr. and Essie Gaines; and his eleven siblings.
He leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories with his two daughters, Pamela Gaines and Terri Bond-Barrett; four grandchildren— Derrick, Traci, Jessica and Sterling; five great-grandchildren— Ashuani, Amauni, Jackson, Jayden, and Nasir; and one great-great-grandchild, Nasir Jr.; along with a host of nieces, nephews, and loved and cherished friends.
Florence’s life was marked by resilience and unwavering faith. In his later years, he faced health challenges with courage and a steadfast belief in God. As the last surviving sibling, his strength was a testament to his enduring spirit. He continued to live fully and pursue the things he loved until he no longer could.
Reverend Florence Gaines Jr. will be remembered as a man of honor, faith, and perseverance. His legacy will live on through the many lives he touched, and his memory will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, April 25, 2026, at 2:00pm at Flat Rock C.M.E. Church 5595 Cokesbury Hwy, Hartwell, GA 30643; with his remains placed in repose at 1:00pm prior to the service.
