Tony Edward Jones, Sr was the son of the late Henry E. and Marlene Jones. He was born May 24, 1966 in Royston, GA. He passed away at his home in Suwanee, GA on January 22, 2021.
At an early age he joined St. Mary's C.M.E Church of Royston, GA. In 1988 he moved to Cleveland Ohio to play for the Cleveland Browns. He became a member of St. Paul AME Church where he received the prestigious honor, the Pastoral Award for his community involvement and dedication to the church. Upon his retirement, he moved back to Georgia and joined New Mercies Christian Church of Lilburn, where he faithfully served as a member and a Deacon under Pastor Jesse Curney III.
Tony was a graduate of Franklin County High School of Carnesville, GA. He continued his education at Western Carolina University in North Carolina on a football scholarship. This is where Tony's football talent began to flourish. His senior year he was invited to participate in the combine camp and that is where he sparked the interest of the Cleveland Browns.
Tony became an undrafted lineman to the Cleveland Browns at the age of 22. The franchise was sold later to the Baltimore Ravens. He played eight years for the Browns/Ravens franchise, starting 99 of 109 games. He started all 16 games in six consecutive seasons (1990-95).
In 1997, the Ravens traded Tony to the Denver Broncos as a second-round pick and that's where he truly made his mark. In that year, Tony started as a right tackle in the Broncos' first Super Bowl win over the Green Bay Packers. The following year, he started as the left tackle helping the Denver Broncos to win back to back championships over the Atlanta Falcons. Known as T-Bone to his teammates, he spent the last four years of his career with the Broncos, retiring after he started 16 games in the 2000 season at the age of 34.
Tony had a successful 13-year career in the NFL. He received several more accomplishments (on and off the field) such as:
·Top 100 Team of Cleveland Browns
·Second Team All Pro (1994)
·Two Time Pro Bowl (1998 & 1999)
·Inducted into the Franklin County Sports Hall of Fame (1998)
·Two-Time Super Bowl Champion (XXXII, XXXIII)
·Received Key to the City of Royston (????)
·Street dedicated to him in Royston, GA named "Tony Jones Street"
·Parked dedicated to him in Royston, GA named "Tony Jones Park"
·Ranked as fourth-best tackle in Broncos' franchise history of all time (2016)
·Made All-Madden Team (2000)
·Broncos' Top 100 Team (2019)
Tony loved mentoring kids in the community. It was important to him to make a difference in the kids he encountered. He would take the time to speak at schools, camps and special youth events. Tony often spent time training college and NFL prospects or kids who desired the same dream as he did as a child. He coached youth football and pushed kids to their highest potential. Tony is highly respected by many.
